Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
